7/1-7/4

This is the Friday of the July 4th weekend.  The campground is filling up, including the row in front of   us.  There goes the view of the river for a few days.  Hard to give up that river view out our front windshield to be staring at RVs instead.  The town has more fireworks stands than you can imagine.  Just about one on every corner.  19,000 residents in the city = at least $4 million spent on fireworks by my estimates which are based on numbers of explosions of various noisemakers & some pretty bursts in the  air. All week, sporadic bursts of enthusiastic fireworks were going off.  Practice makes perfect, I guess.  So, last night we listened to fireworks go off for hours.  The poor dogs in the campground (and probably all over Kalispell, as well) are shaking in their boots at the noise from them.  Fortunately there is no danger of fire as the ground is still pretty wet & should a fire start, they’ve got plenty of water to fight it.

Lone Pine State Park has a wonderful overview of Kalispell. We took our pals, Gordon & Janet, to look at this terrific view of the city & the surrounding mountains looking towards Glacier Nat’l. Park.  We enjoyed seeing this incredible sight again.  Our campground is in the trees just behind the strip of grass in the center right.

Gary is pointing at our campground as he & Gordon discuss the different things that they could see from this viewpoint.

Some wildflowers are beginning to bloom. These tiny beauties were stretching through the other brush to get to the sunlight. They were prevalent along the pathway to the viewpoint at Lone Pine.

Gordon, Janet, Gary & the very well-mannered Reggie (hope I spelled that right) along the path to the viewpoint. The sweet dog is 12 years old & seems to enjoy traveling.  He certainly enjoys Gordon & Janet & is very polite to everyone.  They make their home in Alberta, Canada.

26 of the 28 geese (6 parents, 22 goslings) who called our campground home are shown here as they take their final float as they leave the campground for new vistas. The other two were camera shy.  Those babes are no longer babes, but juveniles who will find their own way at summer’s end.  The river is a busy place.  They have to share it with these rafters & two other boats floating by.

There is a lot of interest in vintage & antique autos in Kalispell.  We often see them in the campground.  They are visiting campers or have been brought on trailers behind motorhomes, as the owners participate in some car show. Always a treat.  A surprising number are from Alberta, Canada.

These two sisters, ages 2 1/2 yrs. & 4 yrs., were camped very near us.  They were just the cutest things. They were very good with each other and were getting LOTS of attention from neighboring campers who, like us, are away from their own grandkids & were just entranced by these two.  Their parents were sweethearts, too. They call Alberta, Ca home.  They were with us a week & we were sorry to see them leave.

Above: The four yr. old invites all her neighbor-campers to join in the fun at her site.  Games to be shared. She is quick to giggle & wants you to have fun, too.

Left:  The sisters thought the speed bump was great fun.

The Fourth of July.  Our Country’s Birthday.  We put out our flags, hung spinners from our pole in back & on the awnings. Not as much decorating around the grounds, but right now, there are more Canadians in here than Americans.  One Canadian did put out an American flag.  Thought that was downright thoughtful.

Lots of fireworks, lots of noise.  Everything the Fourth is supposed to be takes place all over northwest Montana. Parades, even in the smallest towns, picnics, flags on the graves of the veterans and lots of celebrating this incredible country. Every Fourth of July I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be here in the United States.
